About
Catriona is a Scottish artist and events worker based in Adelaide, South Australia. They are a skilled puppeteer and maker with focus on community based outdoor art.
Over the past decade Catriona Smith has developed a multifaceted artistic practice spanning circus, puppetry, photography and community arts. Based between Scotland and Australia, they have worked as both a performer and events worker, contributing to the development and advocacy of the Scottish circus community. Their performance experience includes work as a puppeteer on a large-scale puppet STORM by Vision Mechanics which toured the UK, and as actor and fire performer for PyroCeltica in productions such as Tam O' Shanter's Trail and The Garden of Fiery Delights. Catriona was also a participation in the Room to Play project with Tinderbox Collective, which culminated in an exhibition at the V&A Dundee’s Videogames: Design/Play/Disrupt exhibition. As a recipient of the Edinburgh Creative Development Bursary they were mentored by circus artist Kalina Suter in developing a solo performance which was performed in the Pianodrome in Edinburgh in 2022. Since relocating to Australia, Catriona has expanded their practice to include analogue and cyanotype photography, object manipulation and performance-making. A graduate of the Spin Circus professional development program, they currently collaborate with WHEAT Collective in Adelaide as a puppeteer and maker while continuing to explore the intersections between physical performance and material storytelling.
